John Waters is a criminal defense attorney who handles a wide variety of cases. Prior to joining Lopez & Humphries, Mr. Waters worked for many years as a prosecutor in the Homicide Division at the State Attorney’s Office of the 10th Judicial Circuit. John’s work has been featured in numerous forms of media including Bay News 9, Eyewitness News 9 Orlando, Fox 13 News, the Lakeland Ledger, and the Orlando Sentinel.

John is an accomplished trial lawyer with over 60 jury trials, including many multiple week trials in complex subject matter. He has tried cases in multiple Circuits in the state of Florida. Since 2013, John has served as an adjunct professor with Polk State College, and volunteers his time acting as a guest judge and advisor for local high school trial teams.

John is a lifelong resident of Polk County, having been born and raised here. He grew up working on the family cattle ranch, and it was here that he first learned the values of hard work and pride in a job well done. John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school and served honorably in the Marine Corps Reserves for six years.

John received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He received his Juris Doctor from Florida A&M University College of Law where he graduated Cum Laude. John is a lifelong Gator fan and still attends Gator football and basketball games as frequently as his busy schedule allows.

John resides in Lakeland with his family. If he is not in the courtroom, you will likely find him somewhere outdoors fishing, hunting, scuba diving, or riding a horse working cows. He also competes in BBQ competitions and coaches Little League baseball.
